Lake Ridge Parkway Expanding from Four to Six Lanes
Update (May 2013):
The widening project is complete.
The section of Lake Ridge between Kingswood / Palmer and Joe Pool Lake now has the southbound traffic on the southbound side of the road and only the northbound traffic on the northbound side. There are two lanes southbound and one lane northbound (until all the temporary road markings have been removed and replaced with the correct markings). Once the northbound markings have been done, there will be two lanes in each direction until all the median work has been completed.
Due to the current lack of space in the center of the intersection at Camp Wisdom and Lake Ridge, northbound and southbound will not operate concurrently. The northbound and northbound left turn will run together followed by the southbound and southbound left turn during this phase of construction.
The first new part of the Lake Ridge Extension Project is now open. The section between IH 20 and Bardin Road is open to traffic in both directions.
The future north bound lanes are complete being currently used as one lane going North bound, another South bound and a center turn lane. The contractor is currently working on the future south bound lanes anticipated to be completed by early 2013 with the current projected project completion by spring 2013 depending on weather.
Lake Ridge Parkway was partially opened to traffic to accommodate the Fourth of July traffic from The Marina to Great Southwest Parkway for only one day.
With a major portion of the future north bound lanes constructed, Phase I of the Lake Ridge Widening Project should be completed around the first week of August, meaning that the traffic will be switched over to the new North bound lanes. The new traffic switch will have one lane going North bound and one lane going South bound. There will also be a center turn lane.
During Phase II, there will be a detour placed on the north end of the project at Great Southwest Parkway.
Update (3/20/12): Lake Ridge Parkway is currently closed both northbound and southbound at Camp Wisdom due to severe flooding in the construction zone. Traffic is being re-routed to Travis Street south of the intersection. We are currently monitoring the other areas in the city known to flood due to heavy rain.
Update (2/17/12): The contractor has delayed the closing of Blanco Drive until Monday, Feb. 20, due to weather. Blanco Drive will remain closed until June 2012. Montgomery Drive will remain open.
Update (2/15/12): Travis Drive east of Lake Ridge Parkway was closed on Feb. 6 and will remain closed until June 2012. There will be a traffic signal placed at the intersection of Travis Drive and Lake Ridge Parkway probably in November.
Update (1/30/12): Rush hour traffic on the under-construction Lake Ridge Parkway has substantially improved due to traffic signal timing improvements.
On Jan. 30, one driver reports it took him approximately 7 minutes to get to Camp Wisdom Road from the Estes Peninsula as compared to 23 minutes on the first day of construction, which is only 2 minutes more than the 5 minutes it took to make the same drive before the construction detour was put in place. The north bound green signal was approximately 1 minute and 15 seconds allowing smooth traffic flow.
The traffic signal timing will flip to accommodate southbound rush hour going home traffic during the week.
Lake Ridge Parkway is being expanded from a four-lane thoroughfare to a six-lane thoroughfare beginning January 2012 from Great Southwest Parkway to the Lake Joe Pool. Construction is estimated to take one year.
Beginning mid-January, northbound lanes will be closed from Great Southwest to the lake and southbound lanes will convert to two-way traffic. When the northbound lanes are completed (estimate June 2012), traffic will flip with southbound lanes being closed from Great Southwest to the lake and northbound lanes becoming two-way traffic.
Current traffic counts on Lake Ridge Parkway are about 25,000 vehicles a day. As the Estes Peninsula and Lake Sector filled with homes, traffic counts on the four-lane road have increased:
||25,000 vehicles per day |
||17,000 vehicle per day |
||11,000 vehicles per day |
||8,300 vehicles per day |
||5,000 vehicles per day |
||2,500 vehicles per day|
All six lanes should be open by end of November 2012, with miscellaneous project details anticipated to be complete by January 2013.
TxDOT, Tarrant County and the City of Grand Prairie jointly fund the $8 million project. The city’s portion is $1.3 million. McMahon Contracting is the contractor on the project.
