Tips on Preventing the Flu

The city of Grand Prairie reports a 50 percent increase in EMS calls for flu and flu-like symptoms over the past three weeks as compared to the rest of the year.

Flu is a respiratory illness that spreads easily, and anyone can get the flu. Please consider the following tips for preventing the flu:

1. Get the flu vaccine. It’s the single most effective way to avoid getting the flu.

2. Keep your germs to yourself. Flu germs spread from person to person by way of coughing, sneezing, or talking.

3. Know the symptoms of the flu. All types of flu have similar symptoms. Although the flu and common cold are similar, the flu tends to be more severe: 

  • High fever or feeling feverish. Keep in mind that not everyone with the flu has a fever. 
  • A cough and/or sore throat 
  • A runny or stuffy nose 
  • Chills 
  • Fatigue 
  • Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea (most common in children)

4. Stay home when you are sick. 

  • Avoid close contact with others if you feel ill or have the flu. 
  • Stay home from work or school, and avoid other public places.

5. Cover your cough and sneezes. 

  • Cover your mouth and nose with tissue when you cough or sneeze 
  • If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper arm, not your hands 
  • Put your used tissues in a wastebasket

6. Keep your hands clean. Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds: 

  • After you wipe or blow your nose or cough or sneeze 
  • After using the restroom 
  • After being in contact with someone ill
  • After touching handrails, doorknobs, telephones, or other things handled by others 
  • Before eating and drinking 
  • Before handling food 
  • After handling garbage or trash

Other Tips to Fight the Flu:

For a stronger immune system, get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat a well-balanced diet every day. 

  • Be a "healthy habits" role model for your children. 
  • Keep your distance from someone who has flu symptoms.
