Property ItemsThe Property and Evidence Division receives and maintains over 100,000 pieces of property per year. Everything from cigarette butts to headstones.

You just have to name it and we probably have it.

Property Retrieval:

Property may be claimed Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Identification, as well as the case number, if known, is required. Found property that has an identified owner will be held for 90 days and a certified letter or postcard notifying such owner will be mailed. Property--BikesFound property that has no known owner will be held 30 days. After the 90 or 30 days have expired, the property will then be disposed of according to Texas Code of Criminal Procedure 18.17. Found abandoned bicycles are kept for 30 days, and then set for auction. (See below auction procedures.)

Evidence Retrieval:

The Property Room is only a storage location for all forms of evidence. We do not make decisions for the release of any evidence item. Evidence may be released with the authority of a police officer or the detective that is handling the case, in which you will need to contact them to gain authorization. Evidence may also be released with a court order signed by the judge who presided over the case. This is generally done after the case is completed in the county courts. Evidence will only be released to the person designated by the order.

Auctioned Property:

After property procedures have been met, and subsequently unclaimed, these items are set for auction. Auctions are held the 1st Wednesday of each month at the Grand Prairie Auto Pound, 3010 Hardrock Road, Grand Prairie, Texas 75050. Phone: 972-237-4100. There are no set lists of what is ready for auction, each month is different. The auction of these items, as well as abandoned/unclaimed vehicles, is open to the general public. Viewing starts at 1 p.m. and the sale starts at 2 p.m. Accepted payment is cash, credit card or checks with a letter of guarantee from your bank.
