Girl PuppyLost Pets

Should you lose your pet, the Prairie Paws Adoption Center is an important place to go. Animal Services has a lost pet form to fill out that will be kept on file. It is also important to come by the Center two to three times per week to see if your animal has been picked up by one of the officers or you may check online by using the link below. If you have found a lost animal, please notify Animal Services immediately because someone may be looking for their pet.

Stray Animals

Stray animals without identification at the Prairie Paws Adoption Center are held for a minimum of 72 hours (not including days the shelter is not open, such as Sundays, Mondays, and holidays). If they are not claimed after 72 hours, the animals become the property of the City of Grand Prairie and if suitable, are placed up for adoption. If an animal is caught by our staff in the field and has identification, every attempt will be made to return it home, providing there is an owner present to receive it or it can be put securely in the back yard. If not, the animal will go to the Prairie Paws Adoption Center and every attempt will be made to contact the owner.

What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a tiny computer chip, approximately the size of a grain of rice that has an identification number programmed into it. The chip is encased in a smooth, strong biocompatible glass, and is small enough to fit into a hypodermic needle. Once an animal is injected with a chip, it can be identified throughout its life with a one of a kind number. The identification cannot be lost or altered.

Having your pet microchipped offers a permanent, national identification for your pet. The implant is placed painlessly under your pet's skin. Should your pet stray or become lost and lose his collar and tags, the Home Again national recovery center will provide your name, address, and telephone number to anyone who finds your pet anytime, day or night.

If you find a lost pet, most veterinarians and shelters will check for microchips at no cost. Be a responsible pet owner and take this precaution for your pet's safety.

Prairie Paws Adoption Center will microchip your pet at the low cost of $10.00 an animal. To register your pet with a National Recovery System it is an additional fee of $17.99 per animal annually.

Prairie Paws Adoption Center strongly recommends that pet owners consider microchipping their pets, in addition, as required by law your pet will need to wear a current rabies and identification tag at all times. To learn more about microchipping you can visit www.homeagain.com.
