TV Take-Back Program
As the switch from analog to DTV nears, some of those who have purchased new television sets may be wondering what to do with their old ones. More than 100 Grand Prairie residents took advantage of a special television recycling event sponsored by a grant from the North Texas Council of Governments that took place on Jan. 24, 2009. At that time, residents dropped off TVs, learned about the importance of recycling and received giveaways.
Televisions can also be dropped off at the Grand Prairie Landfill, located at 1102 MacArthur (just north of I-30), during business hours Monday – Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This service is free of charge for those residents who bring the top portion of their current water bill.
Grand Prairie now has two electronics recyclers: Round2Monitex at www.round2monitex.com, and Techway Services at www.techwayservices.com.
Large Venue and Event Recycling
In an effort to support our large venues in their recycling efforts, grant funds will cover the supplies and initial set-up of a recycling operation. The City of Grand Prairie recently received funding through the North Central Texas Council of Governments from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to develop a recycling program for large venues where no recycling program existed. A number of bins have been provided for visitors to recycle at the AirHogs Ballpark, Lone Star Park, and at Tangle Ridge and Prairie Lakes golf courses.
Curbside Recycling
Grand Prairie’s Hop to It! curbside recycling program collects more than 80 tons of material annually. Recyclable items include newspapers, paper, steel, aluminum, tin, glass and plastics such as soft drink and laundry bottles, milk containers, plastic lumber, clothing and more.
Residential recycling is collected on one of a citizens' regular garbage days. A separate truck collects the recyclables and takes them to a Materials Recovery Facility (MuRF). Recycling must be set out by 7 a.m. but no earlier than 8 p.m. on the day before collection. The City of Grand Prairie's recycling program uses an 18-gallon green bin or clear blue plastic bags for collection of recyclables.
Recyclables do not need to be separated — bottles and jars, plastic bottles and jugs, aluminum cans, steel cans, newspapers, magazines, phone books, junk mail and boxes may go in together. Cardboard boxes need to be flattened and placed under the bin.
The recycling bins are centrally-located at the Prairie Paws Adoption Center, 2222 Warrior Drive. Prairie Paws is open Tuesday–Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (closed noon-1 p.m. for lunch, and closed Sunday-Monday). On average, in 2008, 65 bins were distributed to Grand Prairie citizens each month; that's more than two bins a day.
Recycling bins are available free of charge to new customers. Additional bins are available at a cost of $5 per bin.
Commercial bag service customers are also eligible to participate in the curbside program by subscribing online. After subscribing, an 18-gallon green plastic bin is delivered to the business within a few weeks. Business recycling will then be picked up curbside once each week. The fee for this convenience is $2 per month.

Recycling Drop-Off Stations
For residents who have large amounts of recycling and/or who live in multi-family living communities where no recycling service is provided, the city makes three drop-off sites available:
|
UA Theatres parking lot
I-20 & Carrier
510 E Westchester Pkwy.
Grand Prairie, TX 75052 (large recycle bins are located in the front parking lot, closest to Carrier) |
Sam’s Club
parking lot
I-20 & Great Southwest Pkwy.
2325 W. Interstate 20
Grand Prairie, TX 75052
(recycle bin is bright orange and located in the front of the building between Office Depot & Sam’s) |
Behind Uptown Fire Station #1
Downtown Grand Prairie
321 W. Main St.
Grand Prairie, TX 75050
(large recycle bins for public use can be found in the parking lot directly behind the fire station) |

All of the sites have large 40-yard containers that are available for recycling the same items that can be recycled at the curb: bottles and jars, plastic bottles and jugs, aluminum cans, steel cans, newspapers, magazines, phone books, junk mail, and broken-down boxes. As always, citizens are asked to conserve space by flattening cardboard boxes before placing them in the bins.

Recycling and Disposing at the Landfill
Grand Prairie residents or businesses may visit the Landfill, 1102 MacArthur Blvd., to recycle items such as metals, wood/brush, concrete, tires, electronics and aluminum.
In the customer convenience area, there are separate stations for recycling different types of items. Citizens may bring brush, fencing, large items such as refrigerators, sofas, televisions, etc., for disposal.
To support the costs of disposing of certain items, the following items are subject to additional fees: car tires $1/tire, up to 4 tires per trip, computers $1/per computer unit, printers and fax machines $1, small dead animals $5, large dead animals $15.
No liquids, household hazardous waste, or propane tanks will be accepted, but the attendant will be able to provide information as to where to properly dispose of these prohibited items. The City of Grand Prairie provides HHW collection days periodically during the year. To register for this service, please visit click here or call 972-237-8055.
Since the Landfill is open only to Grand Prairie residents or businesses, upon entering the landfill, citizens must stop at the gatehouse to speak with the attendant and to show an I.D., such as a driver's license or a current water bill or pay a charge of $3 per load.

Brush and Yard Waste
Bundles of brush less than 6 feet long weighing less than 50 lbs. and bags of leaves can be placed out with household garbage. One cubic yard will be picked up each collection day. If you have contractors that cut and prune your trees and shrubs, make sure the limbs are either cut and bundled or taken to the landfill by the contractor.
Remember that the City of Grand Prairie has committed to keeping grass clippings out of the landfill by not picking up bags of grass clippings. Grass clippings can simply be left on your lawn or used as compost for gardens. Homeowners who followed the Don't Bag it Lawn Care Plan report that they mow their lawns in 38 percent less time and that their lawns are 30 percent better than they were before Don't Bag It. For more recycling ideas and information, call 972-237-8151.

- computers $1 per computer unit
- printers and fax machines $1
