(Update July 10, 2014)
As you may know by now, Dallas County and the Grand Prairie Independent School District have offered the old Lamar Alternative Center for consideration as a temporary shelter for some of the unaccompanied children that have crossed the border into Texas.
The proposal is for the Alternative Center to be operated as a secure facility funded by the federal government. If this site is selected, the children will not attend our schools and will not be able to leave the facility until they are returned to their home country, or living arrangements are made for them elsewhere.
After meeting with President Obama, Governor Perry and other leaders yesterday, it is increasingly evident that no real solution to this problem is imminent. Ultimately, politicians in Washington bear the responsibility of resolving the current crisis along the U.S. border with Mexico where tens of thousands of exploited children are currently being housed.
Grand Prairie city leaders will not be offered an "official" role in these negotiations. We are however responsible for ensuring the safety of our citizens and preserving the quality of life in our community, and we will remain vigilant in fulfilling our responsibility.
As always, Grand Prairie citizens will remain a priority when it comes to city services. The federal government has produced a Frequently Asked Questions page with further information.
