Q: What can be recycled?
A:

Steel, tin and aluminum cans. It is not necessary to remove paper labels from steel cans, but please rinse out all cans.

Paper items. Newspapers, magazines, coupons, junk mail and envelopes, flattened cereal and cardboard boxes, phone books, etc., will be collected. Cardboard boxes must be flattened and placed under the bin.

Glass items. All glass items, regardless of color, may be recycled. Please rinse all bottles and jars and remove caps and lids.

Plastic items. All plastics marked 1 through 7 are now accepted for recycling. Please look for the number within the recycling symbol Recycle icon on plastic items. You can now recycle your plastic grocery bags too. Styrofoam is not accepted.

Q: Will you pick up my grass clippings? Sofa? Brush trees?
A:

Bundles of brush less than 6 feet long weighing less than 50 lbs. and bags of leaves can be placed out with household garbage. One cubic yard will be picked up each collection day. If you have contractors that cut and prune your trees and shrubs, make sure the limbs are either cut and bundled or taken to the landfill by the contractor.

The City of Grand Prairie also operates a Large Brush Pickup Program year round on a rotation basis from north to south week by week and provides curbside pickup of brush that is not practical or eligible for collection by the city’s weekly garbage collection. Residents receive one free brush pickup each month up to 5 cubic yards. Visit www.gptx.org/streets or call 972-237-8525 for more information.

Remember that the City of Grand Prairie has committed to keeping grass clippings out of the landfill by not picking up bags of grass clippings. Grass clippings can simply be left on your lawn or used as compost for gardens. Homeowners who followed the Don't Bag it Lawn Care Plan report that they mow their lawns in 38 percent less time and that their lawns are 30 percent better than they were before Don't Bag It.

For disposal of bulky items like furniture or TVs, please call 817-261-8812 to schedule a pickup.

Q: Where does the recycling go after it's picked up from the curb?
A:

Abitibi Bowater Recycling Facility

Residential recycling that is picked up from the curbside is taken to Republic Services’ new recycling facility in Fort Worth where it is sorted and processed.

Q: What is considered "hazardous waste?"
A:
Q: Where do I recycle electronics (computers, TVs, etc.)?
A:

The City of Grand Prairie has designed a recycling drop-off area at the Landfill specifically for electronics. Bring these items to the landfill's customer convenience area.

*Texans now have a free and easy way to recycle unwanted personal computers. Instead of bringing computers to the Landfill, you may be able to recycle for free through the computer manufacturer. Visit TexasRecyclesComputers.org for more details, or visit Computer Recycling.

For recycling TVs, please visithttp://www.tceq.texas.gov/p2/recycle/electronics/tv_recycling.html for more information.

Q: What are my recycling days?
A:

Each residence has two days for waste collection and one day-a-week for recycling collection.
