Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Grand Prairie Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Events are scheduled throughout the year; the events are free to Grand Prairie residents but space is limited.  

Due to the rising cost of HHW disposal, each household is limited to utilizing the City's HHW service once per year. We encourage you to consolidate your HHW materials to make the most of your trip.

The City incurs the same cost, regardless of the quantity you bring, so efficient use of this service benefits us all.

Registration is required online or by phone at 972-237-8055. If you are unable to select a time during online registration, then all time slots have been filled (please register for another event date).

Please bring your valid Texas driver's license or ID as proof of residency.

What is and isn't allowed at the HHW collection events?

Accepted

  • Acids
  • Aerosol cans
  • Auto fluids - antifreeze, brake, transmission, etc.
  • Batteries - household and automotive
  • Cleaning supplies and household chemicals
  • Cooking Oil
  • Craft and hobby chemicals
  • Degreasers and drain cleaners
  • Fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
  • Gasoline (must be in approved container)
  • Motor oil and filters
  • Paints and stains (30 gallons max)
  • Photo chemicals
  • Pool chemicals
  • Solvents and thinners

Not Accepted

  • Commercial Waste Not Accepted

  • Appliances
  • Asbestos
  • Brush
  • Building materials
  • Bulky waste
  • Computers and electronics*
  • Explosives and fire works

How can I dispose of HHW properly?

Grand Prairie residents have two options for disposing of HHW:

  • Bring your HHW to a collection event in Grand Prairie; collection events are held several times per year. Registration is required and space is limited, so please register early. Register online or call 972-237-8055.
  • Bring your HHW to the Environmental Collection Center in Fort Worth. The ECC is located at 6400 Bridge St. A voucher is required to dispose of HHW at the ECC. To obtain a voucher, contact the Public Health & Environmental Quality (PHEQ) Department at 972-237-8055.

What is HHW?

HHW is any household product that is flammable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic. This includes things like paints, solvents, cleaners, pesticides, and batteries.

HHW should never be disposed of in regular trash or down the drain, as it can harm the environment and human health.

Why is it important to dispose of HHW properly?

Improper disposal of HHW can pollute our air, water, and soil. It can also harm wildlife and people.

For example, if HHW is disposed of in a landfill, it can leach into the groundwater and contaminate drinking water supplies.

If HHW is disposed of down the drain, it can flow into our rivers and streams, harming aquatic life.
