Warning Sirens

The city’s Outdoor Warning Siren System may be activated for various types of emergencies – not just severe weather. Outdoor warning sirens are not intended to be heard indoors.

When?

Grand Prairie’s Outdoor Warning Siren System consists of 26 strategically placed sirens that are activated for one or more of the following conditions:

• A tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service or tornado, funnel cloud/rotation reported by a reliable source
• Destructive winds in excess of 70 mph
• Reports of hail larger than 1.75 inches (golf ball size)
• Chemical spill
• State/National or other emergencies as appropriate
• Monthly Testing: The city tests the outdoor warning siren system on the first Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
  
  

What do I do?

When you hear outdoor warning sirens:

1. Seek shelter!
2. Seek Information: Tune to your local news/radio stations.
   
   

Emergency Notifications

Radio: To receive emergency notifications indoors, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) All Hazards and Weather Alert Radio with the Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) feature is recommended. The NOAA radio allows you to keep up to date on all types of emergencies. You can purchase one at many local retailers starting at $20. NOAA radios with the SAME feature can be programmed to provide emergency information specific to your area.
